PUNE: A zilla parishad (ZP) teacher from Panshet village of Velhe taluka was caught for ferrying a lone primary student from Ambegaon hamlet to another neighbouring school on the verge of shutdown. His aim was to keep his posting intact in the system and avoid any transfers.
The Pune ZP has been trying to cluster schools that have low enrolments, shifting students to the closest school from ones that will no longer be functional. In the Panshet case, this teacher was seen violating the ZP’s efforts and ferrying the student to keep a school running for his own benefit.
Chief executive officer (CEO) of Pune ZP, Ayush Prasad, told TOI, “As part of bringing schools with low enrolment together, the children in Ambegaon hamlet and nearby villages have been made to study in ZP schools in Ambegaon. However, this defaulter teacher was caught ferrying a student from Ambegaon to another hamlet school that was non-functional for many months due to clustering. The teacher’s intention was to keep his post intact, nurture his future ambition to be a headmaster, and pursue other perks.”
When Pune ZP officials visited the hamlet’s school for a mock drill, they asked the lone student about his residence, and found he was from Ambegaon. “They waited till the end of the day and saw the teacher taking the student home. They questioned the teacher. At that time, they did not take any action, but went on to check the legalities and see how we could prosecute the offender,” added Prasad.
Prasad said the teacher has involved himself in cheating the government. Further, there was poor supervision from the block development officer. The CEO said, “All those involved will face legal action as such incidents in other parts of the district will also then be automatically curbed.”
